Energy Release Scheme: MET Group to support 600 Italian industrial customers with solar powered electricity

December 22, 2025
MET Energia Italia, the Milan-based subsidiary of Swiss-headquartered energy company MET Group, is stepping up its support for Italy’s industrial sector by developing solar plants for around 600 energy-intensive companies. Under Italy’s Energy Release Scheme, the company will act as an aggregator for the industrial customers, with a cumulated annual electricity consumption of more than 6 TWh.

ERS allows industrial customers in the country to benefit from renewable electricity and reduced carbon footprint without having to invest directly in energy infrastructure and manage these complex projects themselves, as MET takes care of development, construction and long-term energy delivery. The first projects are already underway, including the Ferrera Erbognone solar plant, operational since autumn 2025, and the Caltignaga solar project, scheduled to come online in early 2026. Additional plants may follow also through partnerships with other developers.

This large-scale renewable investment is being carried out within Italy’s Energy Release Scheme 2.0, a national programme designed to support energy-intensive industries while accelerating the development of clean energy. Under the scheme, MET Energia Italia will take on the long-term commitments to build new renewable capacity and handle energy management services over a 20-year period, having Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), Italy’s state-owned energy services company, as its main counterparty. The contracts with GSE designed to kick off the project have been signed on 19 December 2025.

Giuseppe Rebuzzini, CEO of MET Energia Italia, said: “The Energy Release Scheme is a powerful instrument that supports Italy’s industrial base while accelerating renewable development. My thanks go to MASE and GSE for their innovative approach and continuous committment to deliver the scheme, and to the 600 customers who chose MET as their partner; their trust has been essential in bringing this ambitious programme to life. Special thanks also go to the colleagues and the partners who with their skills and dedication made this happen.

Tom Van de Cruys, CEO of MET Sales & Trading Segment, added: “This initiative is a strong example of how MET is ‘bringing new energy to Europe’ in the physical and metaphorical sense, and in particular powering up Italy’s industrial sector. The ERS shows that industrial competitiveness and the energy transition can advance together when the right mechanisms and partnerships are in place.”
