“In a few years’ time, I see MET as the ultimate market player, where being privately owned gives us a unique freedom to act,” says Zombor Smaraglay, Executive Director of Gas Wholesale at MET Hungary, who recently received the MET Excellence Award for his exceptional performance in 2025.
Zombor joined MET Hungary in 2012 as Business Development Analyst. He played a key role in establishing the pricing team and was appointed Head of Pricing in 2014. Later, his duties were expanded, and he was promoted as Director of Pricing and Position Management, before becoming responsible for International Business Structuring. In 2024, he was appointed to the role of Executive Director of Gas Wholesale, where he covers several countries in the region including Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova.
During almost 15 years at MET, Zombor has developed deep expertise in regional gas trading and business structuring through direct involvement in complex transactions, including LNG delivery plan negotiations, large-scale wholesale sourcing, internal structuring, storage optimization, and cross-border deals spanning multiple countries.
He and his team have consistently optimized Hungarian gas storage positions over the past decade – contributing to the successful execution of deals with a cumulative value in the tens of millions of euros. This experience has given Zombor the ability to identify and structure opportunities where specialized market insight can translate into tangible commercial value.
Beyond this, Zombor is proud of the environment he has created for his team, prioritising their well‑being even in a high‑pressure setting and enabling a balanced life alongside strong results.
